Inspections:
This unit is responsible for evaluating all aspects of the Sheriff’s Office in order to comply with current standard operating procedures. Their responsibilities include the following:

    • Conducting staff inspections of Sheriff's Office facilities, vehicles, equipment, records, and operations
    • Reporting deficiencies and suggesting corrective measures
    • Conducting follow-up inspections to ensure corrective action has been implemented
    • Identifying programs that could be expanded, reduced, standardized, or eliminated
    • Reviewing and identifying training needs
    • Reviewing forms and recommending modification, standardization, or deletion
    • Ensuring that the Sheriff's Office maintains continuous compliance with accreditation standards
Professional Standards: This unit is responsible for upholding the specialized standards of the Sheriff’s Office by counseling, directing and, if necessary, investigating any deputy who does not meet these standards. Their duties include the following:
    • Conduct investigations pertaining to allegations of inappropriate conduct on the part of Onondaga County Sheriff's Office employees
    • Provide the fact-finding information for the Sheriff and Undersheriff in such matters
    • Act as a liaison between the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office and the District Attorney's Office in matters pertaining to alleged criminal conduct of Sheriff's Office personnel
    • Assist the County Law Department in disciplinary proceedings (Article 75 Hearings, PERB Hearings)

Public Information: The mission of the Public Information Officer is to gather, organize, and disseminate information to representatives of the news media pursuant to N.Y. State Civil Rights Law, N.Y. State Public Officers Law, N.Y. State Fair Trial Free Press guidelines, N.Y. State Law Enforcement Accreditation Standards, and written directives set forth by the Sheriff's Office. The duties of the PIO include the following:

    • Complete daily review of criminal investigations, motor vehicle accidents, and arrest reports
    • Assemble reports for media review and publication
    • Research and respond to specific media inquiries
    • Draft official press releases
    • Coordinate media interviews
    • Schedule and organize news conferences
    • Solicit media interest and promote Sheriff's Office operations
    • Coordinate and manage media access to unusual incident scenes
    • Issue scanner permits and maintain pertinent records
    • Administer the Sheriff's S.T.O.P.P.E.D. program
