Hosts their 23rd Annual Recognition Ceremony

Syracuse, NY: The Onondaga County Traffic Safety Advisory Board (OCTSAB) hosted their 23rd Annual Recognition Ceremony, Tuesday, January 11, 2011, at the Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, Syracuse, N.Y. Niko Tamurian, CNY Central, served as the master of ceremonies. Onondaga County Department of Transportation Commissioner Brian Donnelly provided opening remarks on behalf of the Onondaga County Executive’s office.
The Onondaga County District Attorney’s STOP DWI Awards were presented to Varoosh Zarian and Dzenan Selmovic of the Syracuse Police Department for their efforts regarding impaired driving in the area.
For the last 23 years, the Traffic Safety Advisory Board has honored community leaders in traffic safety with the Norma H. Coburn Traffic Safety Community Service Award. The Coburn Award recognizes an organization or individual for their outstanding achievement in traffic safety. This year's Coburn Award recipient was YNN, for their dedication to getting the traffic safety message out in Onondaga County. Since 1996, the Gerald E. Deitz Individual Safety Service Award has recognized professional individuals in the community who have made a difference in the traffic safety field. This year's Deitz Award winner was David Isbell, Regional Emergency Manager for the New York State Department of Transportation, for his significant contributions to improvement of procedures and sharing of the best practices for local incident management. Given since 2000, the John H. Mulroy Traffic Safety Government Service Award is bestowed on a governmental agency that has dedicated themselves to making roads safer in Onondaga County. This year's Mulroy Award was presented to Chief Michael Lefancheck, for his unwavering dedication to traffic safety in Onondaga County.
In addition to these awards, the top performers from small and large police departments were honored for their efforts in the areas of Impaired Driver Enforcement, Occupant Restraint, and Speed Enforcement. In the small police agency category, Sgt. Peter Vasiloff of the East Syracuse Police Department, was honored for his 51 DWI arrests for impaired driving; Officer Anthony Farella of the Solvay Police Department, was recognized for issuing 133 speeding citations during the period of October 1, 2009 through September 30, 2010; and Officer Daniel Matthews of the New York State Park Police, was recognized for issuing 102 safety and child restraint device tickets in Onondaga County. For the large police agency category, Deputy Jeffrey Passino of the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office, was honored for his 68 DWI arrests; Sgt. Joel Cordone of the Syracuse Police Department, was recognized for issuing 637 speeding citations; Trooper Todd Madely of the New York State Police, was honored for his 155 occupant restraint citations during the reporting period. The top overall performer from a town or village police department was repeat winner North Syracuse Police Officer Jeff Tripp for issuing a total of 1,330 citations during the reporting period. Deputy Joseph Strom, Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office, was selected as the top performer from a large police agency for issuing 1,933 total tickets.
For the sixth consecutive year, the OCTSAB presented Aggressive Criminal Enforcement award was presented to an officer for his efforts that went above and beyond normal vehicle and traffic stops. Trooper Michael Schwarz of the New York State Police, made traffic stops that led to outstanding criminal apprehensions. ShoppingTown Mall, DeWitt, was selected for their efforts in hosting the September 11, 2010 Share the Road Expo.
AAA of Western and Central New York (AAA) presented two Gold Awards and four Platinum Awards to local police departments. These Awards are given to communities that statistically demonstrate measurable effectiveness in addressing local traffic safety issues. An AAA Gold Awards were presented to the DeWitt Police Department and the Liverpool Police Department. Additionally, the Baldwinsville, Camillus, East Syracuse, and Manlius Police Departments each received Platinum Awards.
