Mercury in dentistry

The use of mercury-containing dental amalgam for tooth restoration ("fillings") is still commonplace.

Because of the concern over mercury in the environment, New York State has enacted laws regarding the use and disposal of dental amalgam and the treatment of wastewater that may contain dental amalgam through amalgam separators.

Dentists in New York State are required to notify the wastewater treatment facility that they discharge to when they have installed an amalgam separator.

Dentists in the Onondaga County WEP service area (click for map) should address written notification to:

Sandra Tuori-Bell
Onondaga County Dept of Water Environment Protection
650 Hiawatha Blvd. W.
Syracuse, NY 13204
