Mercury in dentistry
The use of mercury-containing dental amalgam for tooth
restoration ("fillings") is still commonplace.
Because of the concern over mercury in the
environment, New York State has enacted laws regarding the
use and disposal of dental amalgam and the treatment
of wastewater that may contain dental amalgam through
amalgam separators.
Dentists in New York State are required to notify the
wastewater treatment facility that they discharge to
when they have installed an amalgam separator.
Dentists in the Onondaga County WEP service area (click for map) should
