On March 9, 1798, the Town of Fabius was formed
which was part of lot 15 of the New York State Military Tract. The
Military Tract was the compensation of soldiers who served in the
Revolutionary War. As it required almost 10 years to develop and
obtain title to portions of theTract, many soldiers sold their interests
prior to the actual balloting and assigning of lots. This helps
to explain why on 12 of the 50 town lots were actually settled by
grantees. Four of the town lots were reserved by law for church
and school use.
