Village of Tully Clerk Archival Records Listing

The Village of Tully was incorporated in 1875. It has an approximate size of 0.57 square miles. It is located about halfway between Syracuse and Cortland on Interstate 81. The main routes of travel are I-81, NY-80, and US-11. The elevation at the center of the village is about 1252 feet above sea level. Following the Revolutionary War, the area was organized into Military Tracts. The surveyors were responsible for naming the areas and Robert Harpur, one of the assistant surveyors, being a classical scholar and professor at Kings College (Columbia), wanted to make the area distinctive and assigned names from Roman generals and statesmen and Greek men of letters. Tully is derived from the middle name of Marcus Tullius Cicero, an ancient Roman statesman. His writings have exerted enormous influence upon subsequent ages from ancient times to the present.
